Tourism
North Tyneside boasts a stunning coastline, steeped in history and world class events. With award winning golden sand beaches, the iconic St Mary's Lighthouse and the spectacular remains of Tynemouth Priory & Castle, North Tyneside's coast is rich and diverse in natural beauty and heritage.
The area has many family attractions to offer. An award winning aquarium, a water park and a toy museum are just some of the fun places to visit. There is no shortage of heritage in North Tyneside with 2,000 years of history chronicled in the Borough's museums. Segedunum Roman Fort, Museum and Baths is part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site and the Stephenson Railway Museum reflects on the development of steam locomotion. The Rising Sun Country Park is a green flag award-winning park and a local nature reserve.
North Tyneside's towns are steeped in history and distinct in character. Whitley Bay is a seaside town popular with generations of visitors. Tynemouth is a picturesque village with the Georgian style Front Street at it's heart. Nestling in between is the small fishing village of Cullercoats with its idyllic bay. North Shields, a town founded on the fishing industry, is situated on the north bank of the Tyne, as is Wallsend, so named as it marks the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall.
The face of North Tyneside is changing and there has never been a better time to visit with an annual events programme that attracts visitors from wide and far. Below is a sample of the wide array that we offer;
The Mouth of Tyne Festival
Now a firm fixture on the Events calendar. The festival is a mix of live music, street theatre and performing arts in and around Tynemouth Front Street. The highlight of the festival is a Saturday evening concert in the spectacular grounds of Tynemouth Priory & Castle.
North Tyneside International Youth Tournament
Now established as one of the best footballing events in the UK, young footballers from across the country and beyond descend on Whitley Bay every summer to take part in the prestigious North Tyneside International Youth Football Tournament. Boys and girls of all ages take part and hoping to attract the eye of scouts from top teams.
The North Shields Victorian Market
Seasonal magic and fun takes place every December in North Shields. The Victorian Christmas Market sees Northumberland Square transformed into a winter wonderland with stalls selling seasonal and local produce, homemade crafts and gifts and much more. With traditional music and Carols and even an ice sculptor, the market gets everybody in the mood for the festive season.
