Industry and Infrastructure

North Tyneside is on the north bank of the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear and has a magnificent coastline stretching up to Northumberland. The Borough is an area of sharp contrasts where suburbs meet sea and tradition meets innovation. Situated between the North Sea and the northern banks of the River Tyne in the north east of England, it forms part of the Tyne and Wear conurbation. The borough is relatively compact, covering an area of 82 square kilometres and includes former mining villages such as Burradon, seaside towns such as Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, as well as urban areas, such as Wallsend. The coastline, including Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, is popular with visitors and is a desirable place to live.

North Shields, at the mouth of the Tyne is a thriving town and home to the Fish Quay, traditionally a major centre for the fishing industry and now undergoing major regeneration to accommodate new businesses and the increasing number of visitors. Wallsend is the eastern gateway to Hadrian's Wall and has been associated with the marine industry over many decades. This area is also undergoing a major transformation with new advanced marine industries replacing the traditional shipbuilding. In the centre of the borough is a major business development corridor boasting the largest business park in the UK with national and international companies choosing to locate there. Rail, road, air travel and the rapid link Metro all provide excellent transport communications throughout the region, the country and internationally with the Port of Tyne also providing major sea links throughout the world.
